Emily was excited to take her son, Dean, out for dinner. Since he left for college, they’d grown distant, and she missed him terribly. But as they sat at the restaurant, Dean barely looked up from his phone, responding to her attempts at conversation with one-word answers.
When Emily accidentally knocked over her water glass, shattering it on the floor, Dean snapped. “God, can’t I just have one peaceful dinner without you embarrassing me?” he yelled, loud enough for the whole place to hear. Emily’s heart broke, and she began to cry quietly, whispering, “Let’s just go.”
